Rabbit Launches OS3 Agentic Operating System
AI startup Rabbit has launched OS3, a cross-platform agentic operating system that runs on existing devices, pivoting away from dedicated hardware to focus on flexible, local AI workflows.

Rabbit has officially released OS3, a cloud-based "agentic operating system" that marks a major shift from the company's original hardware-first strategy. While the software is available as an update for the orange-red R1 handheld device, users do not need the physical gadget to run it. Instead, OS3 can be accessed via desktop browsers, Telegram, or iMessage. Rabbit has halted manufacturing of the R1, of which it sold over 100,000 units with a return rate under 5 percent and a 45 to 50 percent hardware margin. The company, which has raised $60 million and employs 15 people, plans to release a dedicated "vibe coding" machine called Cyberdeck in the coming months rather than an R2.
The OS3 platform operates across multiple screens by connecting to a local agent node installed on Windows, Mac, or Linux, linking up to five machines per account. Powered by Rabbit's Direct Large Action Model (DLAM) technology, the system can execute local software tasks, write code, and debug autonomously. It features a single, continuous chat stream interface and supports universal skill compatibility, allowing users to auto-install third-party agent skills by pasting a public URL. Practitioners can also integrate external agents like OpenClaw or Hermes AI.
To use OS3, Rabbit is employing a "Bring Your Own Key" (BYOK) model. There is no monthly subscription fee; instead, users provide their own API keys from developers like OpenAI and Anthropic, or connect local open-source models. For security, the local agent does not store or sell data, keeping file contents on the user's machine, though conversation logs reside on Rabbit's servers and reasoning prompts are sent to the chosen model provider.
For developers and AI practitioners, this release transforms Rabbit from a niche hardware novelty into a highly flexible, cross-platform automation tool. By allowing local execution alongside cloud-based LLMs, OS3 enables users to orchestrate complex workflows across multiple personal computers using simple chat commands. This setup bypasses the limitations of closed ecosystems, giving practitioners direct control over their model selection and data privacy.
