Apple M5 Ultra Mac Studio Delivers Massive AI Power

Apple has introduced the M5 Ultra Mac Studio, a compact desktop computer designed to handle intensive local artificial intelligence and 3D rendering workloads. Housed in a 7.7-inch square, 3.7-inch high aluminum chassis, the top-tier configuration retails for $12,299. For this price, practitioners receive a machine equipped with a 36-core CPU, an 80-core GPU, 256GB of unified memory, and 4TB of storage. The system features advanced connectivity, including two front-facing USB-C ports and an SDXC slot, alongside four rear Thunderbolt 5 ports, two USB A ports, 10Gb Ethernet, HDMI, a headphone jack, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 6. It can drive up to eight 6K displays at 60Hz or four Studio Display XDR units.

The hardware represents a massive leap in processing capabilities, particularly for machine learning. Compared to the previous M3 Ultra, the M5 Ultra chip delivers up to 4.3 times faster AI performance, 1.8 times faster GPU performance, and 1.3 times faster CPU performance. When measured against the older M1 Ultra, the new model achieves 4.7 times faster rendering in Redshift, 15.4 times faster CopyCat ML training in Foundry Nuke, and 9.8 times faster time-to-first-token performance in LM Studio. Additionally, a new storage controller and fast NAND memory double read and write speeds over the prior generation, with Blackmagic Disk Speed tests clocking 13,941MB/s write and 11,350MB/s read speeds.

For AI practitioners and creative professionals, these specifications translate into a highly efficient, quiet, and cool-running on-premises server. The system consumes just 480 watts at peak power, making it a viable alternative to power-hungry PC builds. With four ProRes accelerators capable of handling up to 33 streams of 8K video and new genlock synchronization over USB-C, video editors can work with raw footage without generating proxy files. However, buyers must accept some trade-offs: neither the RAM nor the SSD can be upgraded by the user, and Apple does not bundle a keyboard or mouse with the five-figure machine. Despite these limitations, the M5 Ultra Mac Studio serves as an incredibly fast, private environment for training and running large language models locally.
